This editorial cartoon appears in the Feb. 25, 2015 issue of the Vancouver Courier by its cartoonist, Geoff Olsen. The Courier is a print newspaper that appears twice per week and is distributed to most homes and offices in Vancouver, Canada.
The image of the soldier in the cartoon is taken from news reports in Norway and Germany in early September 2014 based on documentary film footage of the ‘Azov’ extreme-right paramilitary battalion in southern Ukraine. ‘Azov’ is a partner with the Ukrainian government in its ‘anti-terrorist operation’, that is, civil war, in eastern Ukraine. The report in Germany was broadcast on ZDF television network on Sept 8, 2014.
Very few mainstream news outlets in North America reported this story. A brief report appeared on NBC News.
