On March 28, 2015, the city of Nikolayev in southern Ukraine celebrated it liberation 71 years ago (1944) from German Nazi occupiers. When an officer of the Ukrainian army spoke to the event, he likened the 1944 liberation to today’s war in eastern Ukraine, saying both were waged to defend ‘the integrity of Ukraine’. The large crowd participating in the ceremony reacted angrily. The local citizens shouted at the officer and the Ukrainian army hierarchy: “Morons, murderers, bastards”.
