Kramatorsk is a city of some 100,000. Last spring and summer, the Ukrainian army bombarded the city and eventually seized it from civilian protesters during the civilian uprising against the right-wing government that  seized power in Kyiv in February 2014. Many thousands of residents were forced to flee the city and have not returned.

Among the flags carried by the mob destroying the statue are the flag of the USA, the extreme right of Ukraine (red and black) and the electoral machine of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko (red and white). As in the dozens and hundreds of other destructions of historical monuments that have taken place in Ukraine, police and government authorities stand by and watch. The video shows police standing by at a distance.

VI Lenin, a Russian, was one of the founders of the first independent republic of Ukraine, in 1917. In 1922, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the 15 founding partners of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
