‘Today’s Zaman’ was the English-language, online publication of the Turkish daily newspaper ‘Zaman’, Turkey’s largest-circulation newspaper. ‘Zaman’ was violently seized and closed down by the Turkish government on the evening of March 4, 2016 as part of the government’s developing crackdown on the social movements led by Muslim cleric Gulen Fethullah, who resides in the United States.

According to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, Fethullah Gulen’s reach is extensive, especially in the media. That includes the Zaman newspaper, shut down many months before the recent coup attempt. Deutsche Welle spoke with one of its former writers, Mahir Zeynalov. He writes from Washington DC and tweets at @MahirZeynalov.
