“As a matter of long-standing policy, the United States does not support political transitions by non-constitutional means.”–Jen Psaki, spokesperson for U.S. State Dept.
On March 11, Democracy Now! carried a news story on the new threats by the U.S. government against the elected government of Venezuela. The Venezuelan government is accusing the U.S. of plotting another military coup in the country, like the one the U.S. supported in 2002 which briefly overthrew Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The program broadcast a three minute excerpt of a press conference at the State Department days earlier where State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki reponded to journalists’ incredulity over her claim that the United States government does not support coups against elected governments, such as the coup it supported last year in Ukraine.
