Major General Igor Konashenkov, chief spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Defense

On February 11, 2016, the press spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov, delivered a harshly critical press briefing responding to Western government lies and distortion regarding the Russian military intervention in Syria.

Konashenkov provided a description of Russian military intervention in Syria, in cooperation with the Syrian government. He contrasted his factual accounting with the hypocrisy and falsified stories  by Western governments and media. For example, he described the circumstantial parallels between the U.S. bombing of a hospital in Afghanistan in October 2015 and the recent hospital bombings in Syria for which Russia was widely blamed by Western voices.

Konashenkov’s comments were video recorded and are available with English sub-titling at this weblink (or click the screen below). The YouTube broadcast is six minutes.

Konashenkov was brutally frank in responding to the words and statements of what the Russian government calls its ‘Western partners’. Here are a few excerpts from the Major General’s press briefing:

  • It has come to the point of pictures of Aleppo, destroyed long before the start of Russia’s operation in Syria, are presented by leading American and European media outlets as the results of alleged Russian bombardments.
  • [Regarding an allegation of Russia bombing a hospital in Aleppo on February 10]: ‘Rights activists’ nonsense from London is one thing, but if it is declared by a Pentagon representative posing as a military professional, that’s another (…) First of all, Colonel Warren is likely to be disappointed… Russian aircraft were not operating near Aleppo yesterday… Only aviation of the anti-ISIS coalition flew over the city yesterday: warplanes and attack UAVs…
  • As was previously promised to our American partners, such information will not remain hidden any more. Yesterday at 13:55 (MSK), two U.S. Air Force A-10 attack aircraft entered Syrian air space from Turkey and reaching Aleppo by the shortest path, made strikes against objects in the city… For some reason, Colonel Warren did not make this mission publicly known in the literal or even figurative sense.”
  • Everyone knows already that detachments of the Syrian opposition are sharing reconnaissance data with us quite effectively. Today, most of them are cooperating with the Syrian government.
